Since we know the devil is a defeated foe with an intention to usurp our authority over him, we should also know the Bible warns us to be vigilant concerning him. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Our enemy the devil lies in wait for an opportune moment to gain access to our lives to destroy us. He looks to see when we stop paying attention to our walk with God, when we lay down our life of righteousness and authority. He looks to see when we seem to be tired and weary under the weight of the pressures of life and spiritually weak because of our neglect to seek the Lord and spend time in His Word and His presence. Which is why the Psalmist begins the above Psalm with the phrase, “Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain and even path…” The indwelling Holy Spirit is our teacher, He enlightens the Word of God to us – showing us His way of living right and remaining in a place of victory in the midst of our enemies. We must never be intimidated by the fact that the devil observes us, Psalm 23:5 says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.” While we abide in Jesus and keep His Word alive in our hearts, we feast at the table of the Lord – and our adversary, the devil, has to witness the abundant goodness of God in our lives, as he is constantly reminded of his defeat. While we choose to make spending time feasting in the Word and fellowshipping with the Lord, in His presence, His Holy Spirit keeps the steady flow of His anointing oil flooding up from our spirits and overflowing into every area of our souls! It’s this anointing oil that completely destroys any yoke of bondage the devil will try to place over our lives. While we dwell in the secret place of the Most High, we remain under His shadow – a place no foe can withstand, because we become inaccessible to the grasp of the enemy (Psalm 91:8 AMPC).
