Paul wrote this strong statement to the Corinthian church. Despite the divisions within the church, there were also severe cases of sexual immorality. A man had slept with his fathers’ wife. Paul’s reaction to this was so strong, he said they were to hand such a person over to Satan so his flesh could be destroyed. He didn’t treat the subject lightly at all, and neither should we. God commands us to treat our bodies with honour and respect by exercising self-control. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us why: “…do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” Our surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ has weightier consequences than many realize. The Holy Spirit of God literally took up residence within our own spirits! That surrender means losing our rights to govern ourselves. We are to willingly give ownership of our thoughts, emotions and wills to the One who loves us and gave Himself for us. If we choose to partake in sexual immorality – we sin against our own bodies, giving the devil access to the deep and intimate parts of our souls. The Book of Numbers mentions that the Moabites hired Balaam the son of Beor, a mighty sorcerer at the time, to curse the children of Israel. However, whenever he attempted to curse them, God turned it into a blessing. When the enemy saw that he could not destroy them by cursing them, he sought another means to destroy them. As we read further in the Book of Numbers, we see that the Midianite women enticed the men of Israel to commit sexual immorality. Though the enemy could not destroy them by cursing them, he was able to get a foothold in their camp by causing them to commit sexual immorality! He had access to their souls that influenced their wills. If an occasion arises to commit sexual immorality, we need to flee from it. It not only gives the enemy direct access to the life of a believer, it will destroy us if we don’t cut it off immediately.
