In Psalm 8, God seems to transport David right back to the point of creation. His mighty power and awesome strength is displayed in His ability to create the world and all that exists in it. In verse 2, mention is made of the devil, the enemy of God and our souls. He is called the avenger – someone who inflicts harm on people. We know this to be the exact nature of the devil don’t we. In John 10:10, Jesus said the devil came to steal, kill and destroy. His nature and bitter hatred towards God and man has never changed, and it never will. But praise God – every plan and strategy the devil has ever had to stop the redemption of mankind, our reconciliation to the Father, and the reinstatement of our authority and dominion has been brought to nothing! Psalm 8:2 says babies (more generally meaning children) and those still being weaned, have the ability to bring the enemy down! David could be referring to baby Moses, who was rescued from the River Nile by Pharaoh’s daughter. This same child grew up to save God’s people from the tyranny of Egypt where they were oppressed as slaves for 400 years. He could also be referring to the infant, Jesus, who narrowly escaped the slaughter of all the Hebrew baby boys, under the hand of Herod. This same Jesus grew up to become the Savior of the world! This verse could also be referring to what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:27, how God chooses what is considered to be weak, to shame the strong. Later on, Paul continues the same theme when he explains how God places His excellent, mighty power inside our weak, human vessels to display His Own glory! While our enemy, the devil, chooses to believe that he can keep us in a place of defeat and enslaved to sin – we know, by God’s Word and His indwelling Holy Spirit – the devil’s plan is futile. Because of the Greater One living in us – we have the victory and authority over the devil. Never allow him to intimidate you by making you think you are powerless against him or his plans to steal your peace and joy. Because you are in Christ Jesus, you have been made more than a conqueror! So, stand your ground – keep the faith of God flowing strong inside you – and you will always have the power to overcome the devil, who is a defeated foe!
