The Lord is Your Fountain

When Jesus spoke to the woman at the well, He said He was the source of living water that would become a fountain of everlasting life inside her. Being a Samaritan, this woman knew the prophecies of the coming Messiah. The prophet Jeremiah described the Lord as being the fountain of living waters, the exact phrase Jesus used to describe Himself to her (Jeremiah 17:13). Moses foretold of the Messiah being a prophet, and Jesus just told her things about her life that only God could have revealed to Him. A prophet… a fountain of living waters … In a moment, she joined the dots and realized exactly who was standing in front of her. The truth is, the living waters Jesus spoke about is the powerful flow of God’s eternal life and power. It is the fullness of the Holy Spirit, bubbling up and flowing unhindered in our lives, and it is fully accessible to every believer in Christ. That flow of life includes every character trait of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:23 lists these traits. One of them being God’s love. 1 Corinthians 13 describes it as a powerful force that never fades or fails. Verse 7 says, “Love bears up under anything and everything that comes… its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].” Another powerful trait of the Holy Spirit is peace. This peace is able to mount garrison over our minds and protect us from every assault of the enemy. It acts as umpire, always silencing the confusion and leading us in God’s perfect plan. Joy is another powerful flow of the Holy Spirit. It infuses us with mighty inner strength, under the toughest of circumstances. These are only 3 of the 9 powerful traits of the Holy Spirit that dwell inside every born-again believer. When we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, these traits bubble up from within our spirits and flow as mighty rivers into every area of our lives. As we keep our minds full of God’s Word, these rivers of life flow stronger, keeping us in a place of victory and power, and authority over the enemy. Just as the woman at the well discovered Jesus as her source of living water, we can drink deeply and have His eternal life flow powerfully in and through our lives too.
