A Clear Conscience

In the above scripture Paul is giving Timothy valuable instructions for living a Godly life. In 1 Timothy 1:5, he tells him the purpose of his instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. At that time there were false teachers who had deliberately chosen to go against their consciences and as a result shipwrecked their faith. Paul wasn’t talking about a casual or accidental error in judgement or teaching, but a purposeful decision to reject the truth of God’s Word and violate their own consciences. As Believers, we have the Spirit of God living inside us. His Spirit always communicates with our own spirits because they are inseparably connected (1 Corinthians 6:17). When we habitually pay attention to our spirit-man, being sensitive as it speaks in that still, small voice into our minds and understanding – we will always be led into truth (John 14:17).  When we ignore or disobey the leading of our spirit-man, we grieve the Holy Spirit, and our conscience becomes seared.  Paul explained to Timothy that a seared conscience is a very dangerous thing for a Believer because he will no longer be able to hear the voice of God. As a result, he will follow any skewered doctrine, including his own flesh, or carnal nature and his faith will become shipwrecked. The voice of the spirit will never tell us to do anything that goes against the Word of God, or His nature. How wonderful to know that as we turn our attention to the spirit-man, who is possessed by God’s own Spirit, we are always able to commune with Him, hear His wisdom, and sense His peace and love. Today, decide to take Paul’s advice to cling to our faith with all we have and keep a clear conscience, making sure we listen to and obey the still, small voice of the Spirit inside of us.
