Identity is linked to a name. There are a few instances recorded in the Bible where God changed people’s names when they encountered Him. In doing so, He set them on a new course for their future.
Simon wasn’t fully aware of the great revelation he would have of Jesus, or the mandate he’d carry out when Jesus changed his name to Peter. Abram’s name changed to Abraham after God personally revealed his destiny to him. Jacob became Israel after he wrestled with God, changing his identity from being a deceiver into one full of promise and purpose.
The Bible tells us we are given a new identity in Christ Jesus – He has given us His Own Name to live in the victory He won for us on the cross. Our believing in the power of His Name will break the power of sin, fear, poverty, sickness and any oppression of the enemy over our lives. Know this is your identity in Him today, and allow Him to make all things new.
