Blessed Friendships

Psalm 1:1 (AMPC), “BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.”

The friendships we choose and the company we keep really does matter. One Bible commentary describes this verse as a downward spiral. To begin is a willingness to be influenced by the ungodly, followed by entering into fellowship with them, followed by joining in their scornful attitudes and behavior. This certainly aligns with the scripture that says bad company corrupts good character. Ephesians 5:7–8 says, “Therefore do not become partners with [the sons of disobedience]; for at one time, you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” While we are taught to be kind to all people and not think of ourselves as more important than others, we are warned to not keep company with and be influenced by people who have no regard for the Lord, or His righteous ways. Refusing to align with those who choose to do wrong, are governed by sinful desires, and mock God and those who live righteously – will protect you from being sucked into this downward spiral of spiritual suicide.  When we are born again, our new nature has absolutely nothing in common with the kingdom of darkness. We have been saved out of the kingdom that only leads to disappointment and death, and into a kingdom that is righteousness, peace, and the joy of the Holy Spirit! Keeping company with people who love God and His Word, and live controlled by the Holy Spirit, influences us to grow in the things of God, and overflow with everything that pertains to life and godliness! We are literally empowered to prosper in every area of life when we deliberately choose God’s way over the way of the world. Godly friendships are powerful, the Bible says that one can put a thousand to flight, but two – ten thousand! Decide to be very mindful of whom you choose to walk with, stand with and sit with – your spiritual prosperity counts on it.
