Crucify the Flesh

Jealousy and self-ambition are what the Bible refers to as works of the flesh. That word works in the Greek denotes things that have the ability and intension to produce. The word flesh refers to something with a carnal, sinful nature. So when Paul taught on the works or the flesh, he warned  that leaving our sinful, carnal nature unchecked would lead to our destruction.  That’s because they have the ability and intension to produce evil disorder and death in our lives. (Galatians 6:8). Throughout the Bible we see how jealousy and self ambition drove men to commit heinous acts. Because of their jealousy and envy, the chief priests delivered Jesus over to Pilate to be crucified. Because of jealousy and envy evil leaders plotted to throw Daniel into the lion’s den. Because of jealousy and envy, Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. Jealousy in the heart of man, unless it is confronted and dealt with, will lead to all kinds of evil and foolish lusts. Paul tells us to crucify the flesh daily by bringing it under submission to the Word of God. That means recognising the intentions and feelings we are harbouring are wrong and dangerous, and must be replaced with the powerful love of God. God’s love that is poured into our hearts by His Holy Spirit, will drive out all fear and insecurity and cause us to act and behave as people controlled by the Spirit and not the flesh. The results will always bring fruitfulness, favour and life, instead of destruction and death.
