Fork Tongue

We are not to speak evil of anyone. While we are instructed by Scripture to expose the unfruitful works of darkness, we should never find ourselves in a position of speaking evil of others. Gossip and slander are wicked in the eyes of God. The Bible says that saltwater and freshwater cannot come from the same spring. Just the same, a tongue that praises God cannot curse man. The two are contrary to each other. Every time we curse or speak evil of someone, we are cursing or speaking evil of someone who was made in the image of God.  No matter what their faults, or the position of their personal conviction towards God – our place is to pray for them and not tear them down by cruel words behind their backs. No unwholesome talk should come from our mouths, only words that are helpful for building others up. The Bible makes it clear that the Lord hates gossiping and backbiting, because it sows discord among brethren. It builds a wedge of mistrust or disrespect. The Bible says in Proverbs that he who sows discord amongst brethren is an abomination to the Lord. Powerful words indeed! In truth, if we don’t have anything edifying or uplifting to say, we should probably remain silent. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes, “Do not curse the king, even in your thought; do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; for a bird of the air may carry your voice, and a bird in flight may tell the matter.” 1 Peter 3:10 says, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.” Now, the Word does say it’s impossible to tame the tongue, however, if we live controlled by the Holy Spirit, and remain in the love of God – our tongues will begin to speak in line with the will of God! Give yourself to the work of the Holy Spirit today, keep your heart and mind open to receive the flow of His love and you will find your words being full of wholesome and edifying things, imparting grace to those that listen.
