Greater Things!

Between the time Jesus left the earth and the outpouring of His Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, the Bible says the disciples gathered together in the upper room in Jerusalem – just as Jesus instructed them to do. As they gathered, they were in unity and prayer. Acts 1:14 says, “All of these with their minds in full agreement devoted themselves steadfastly to prayer, [waiting together] with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.”  We can only speculate that they must have marveled over the instructions Jesus left with them. Such as: What did He mean when He said they would do greater works than these?  Could He have meant greater in the sense of there being more people doing the works of Jesus? Before He left there was really only Him doing the works of God. Or could the greater be speaking of the geographic area of where the works would be done? Jesus only travelled in person to Jerusalem, Judaea, and Samaria. Now, followers of Christ could cover the nations of the world doing the works of God. Or perhaps the greater was in terms of the time allocated to do the works of God? Believers would do the works of Jesus from generation to generation – until Jesus’ return. (Matthew 28:20).  Whereas Jesus only had three and a half years to do the works of God. In truth, the disciples had not yet perceived the extent of the mighty power that was about to be released on the earth. The greater may very well have been what they were about to experience as a result of the power of God been poured out into and upon them! The things they were about to see would not match anything they had yet witnessed! In Acts 2, we see how that mighty rushing wind of the Holy Spirit along with tongues of fire on each person’s head brought a power that completely transformed each of them, filling them with a fearless boldness to witness and do the works of God with supernatural ability! In Acts 4:4, 5,000 people turned their hearts to God and devoted themselves to follow Him in a single day! In Acts 5, the awesome fear of God overwhelmed the whole church and all who heard what happened when two people suddenly dropped dead after lying to the Holy Spirit. In Acts 5:15 we read how people walking the city of Jerusalem would encounter the sick continuously being carried into the street so that Peter’s shadow would pass over them and they would be healed! Because of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the church is empowered to walk in these greater things! Today, choose to yield to and embrace the power of the Holy Spirit to do His greater things as He leads!
