Holy Spirit-Control

The English Standard Version says, “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”  Being able to win a battle and have something to show for it is impressive, but being able to control your temper, regardless of your frustration, is an even better quality.  James 3:2 calls the man who is able to control his tongue as perfect, because in doing so, he is able to control his whole body. Both Solomon and Paul wrote about the importance of having a well-developed self-control. Solomon said holding back on quick, angry outbursts is a good indication of our ability to step back and asses in order to understand situations before making foolish remarks or judgements (Proverbs 14:29). Paul describes self-discipline as something we must train ourselves in to prevent the enemy from having an open door to our lives, and to prevent disqualifying ourselves as ambassadors of Christ (1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 1 Thessalonians 4:4).  Learning to allow the Holy Spirit to have full control in our lives will put a lid on anger and empower us to resist any sinful passions, appetites and affections that will lead to our destruction. Our choice to obey Him will gain us rewards that will never be lost because of their eternal value.
