In the Face of Jesus

In the previous chapter, Paul gave reference to the glory of God that was reflected in the face of Moses.  As a reflection, that glory began to fade as soon as Moses left the presence of God.  In our new covenant with God, that glory is Jesus, and since His Own Spirit lives within our hearts, His glory shines intently and brightly on the inside of every believer. This glory that shines from the face of Jesus never fades! He is the source of light! The Bible says Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His Person (Hebrews 1:3).  In Him, we find and experience that glory for ourselves! In Him we live, and move and have our being, not just for a passing moment, but for eternity! One Bible commentary on this particular verse pointed out that every culture has a “theme” or idea summarising what that culture values. In Paul’s era, the Hebrews valued “light”. They were uniquely gifted with a revelation from God concerning what was good and right. The Greeks valued “knowledge” because of their love of philosophy. The Roman culture prized “glory”, since at that time they were the empire that conquered the world.  Paul made reference to all three of these values in 2 Corinthians 4:6, implying that Jesus Christ is the fulfilment of anything and everything we could ever want or value! What’s more – when He says that light, knowledge and glory are reflected, “…in the face of Jesus” – he emphasises that knowing Jesus as a person is far more valuable than knowing an idea! Since we are filled with the glory of Jesus Himself – let’s live in a way that reflects His light to the world we live in.
