Keep the Faith

In this final letter to Timothy, Paul urges him to reject any temptation to be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus, or of his association to Paul. Paul had been at odds with the law of the day and imprisoned for his work of Gospel ministry, which led to some of his co-workers jumping ship.  They didn’t want Paul’s negative reputation and record of imprisonment to taint their own reputations. Paul wanted Timothy to keep Jesus and his purpose the core focus in his life. Paul had personally been given his ministry by Jesus, and he was completely committed to follow through regardless of any opposition – even his own friends turning away from him.

Perhaps what impresses us the most is Paul’s response to these hardships.  He never allowed his heart to become bitter.  He remained steadfast in his assignment; full of faith and confident expectation to see the Lord’s deliverance from every evil attack; all the while giving glory to God (2 Timothy 2:16-17).  If we follow his example to remain fixed on our purpose, and tender hearted towards others, allowing no bitterness or resentment to harden us – we too will it be able to say we have fought the good fight; finished our race; and kept the faith.
