Kindness that Positions for Blessing

King David had a noteworthy quality to honour those who had been loyal and helpful to him in times of trouble. Jonathan, King Saul’s son was one of those people. When his father tried to kill David, Jonathan remained loyal to David, helping him escape. After Jonathan’s death, David made a vow to care for the needs of Jonathan’s family. He learnt that Jonathan had a disabled son called Mephibosheth and summoned him to come to the palace. On hearing that King David, the enemy of his late grandfather King Saul, wanted to see him – Mephibosheth was extremely apprehensive. He had already gone through so much in his life, when he was a baby he suffered a fall that caused him to be lame. This brought shame on the Royal Family, so he was isolated, and hidden from public scrutiny. He had just, suddenly lost his father and grandfather in battle, and now he certainly wasn’t hopeful for meeting his grandfather’s enemy, who just happened to be king! But King David was gracious! He not only gave Mephibosheth the land his grandfather owned, and caretakers to keep it for him, he made him a permanent guest at his table! Jonathan’s loyalty and kindness produced great fruit for his offspring. King David became a vessel of blessing to Jonathan’s family when he was un-able to take care of them himself.  Understand, every act of kindness positions us to receive the blessing of the Lord, even for generations to come.
