Love is the Standard

Isn’t it interesting that in the preceding verses to the disciples asking for this “faith injection”, Jesus was speaking to them about forgiveness? Not just addressing a one-time ‘per chance’ forgiveness; but the intentional choice to forgive repeatedly, even when it feels like patience and the grace to forgive has been exhausted.

We tend to mark our own standard of forgiveness by how much others deserve to be forgiven. But this is not the standard set by Jesus, is it. In Matthew 5:46 He said, “For if you love those who love you, what reward can you have? Do not even the tax collectors do that?” Think on that for a moment! One of the ways the sincerity and genuineness of our faith will be made evident is by our willingness to put God’s way of treating others above our own, especially when it’s not convenient for our feelings to do so.

The standard by which we forgive others is directly proportional to the evidence of active faith in us. Both are measured by the presence of God’s love operating within us. God’s love in us is the standard by which we increase in every spiritual quality. Let it abound in your heart and nothing will stop you from being a spiritual giant in Him!
