Obedience Opens the Way for the Promise

Abraham received a promise and an oath from God – an heir of his own – an offspring to inherit the blessing of God for generations to come. The journey from the promise to the possession of that promise took patience, trust and unwavering commitment. Even after Haggar gave birth to Ishmael, God faithfully re-affirmed Abraham and Sarah’s faith, setting them back on track. Finally, while enjoying and raising Isaac, who was their fulfilled promise, Abraham’s obedience to God was tested. Abraham was faced with the decision to either disobey God or slay the promise fulfilled. Everything Abraham and Sarah had longed for was locked up in Isaac, and now God was asking him to give him up. We cannot hold the promise over the Promise Keeper. If Abraham disobeyed God, he would’ve proved his allegiance to the creation and not the Creator. He was so fully persuaded that God would keep His promise to him that he didn’t waver in His faith and took action to obey Him. As a result, God intervened and Abraham lost nothing but gained everything his heart desired! Sometimes obedience may seem like a sacrifice, but in truth, it’s the gateway to the fulfilment of His promises.
