Perfect, established and strengthened

This is a powerful promise from God for every believer. The only phrase that doesn’t seem to fit well is the one that says, “after you have suffered a while”. What did Peter mean when he wrote about us suffering?  Well, when we read the verses preceding verse 10, we understand what sufferings he was referring to. 1 Peter 5:8-9 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” We live in a fallen world and have a very real adversary who is bent on trying to deceive and destroy the church of Jesus Christ. Making a stand for righteousness will certainly invite rejection and persecution from all sides.  However, through the finished work of the cross, the devil has been defeated and stripped of his power to harm us.  So even if he throws his best punch, we have been given the authority to stand firm in faith and use the Name of Jesus to enforce the devils defeat.  In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 Paul said, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed!” When we choose to hide ourselves in Christ by fully abiding in Him and having His Word abide in us – we will always overcome anything the devil throws our way.  Learning to resist him and to stand securely in faith will cause us to be made perfect, established and strengthened for victory in Christ Jesus!
