Sit and Serve

The Bible records two different responses to Jesus being in the home of Mary and Martha that day. One began to serve and the other simply sat at His feet to take in all He had to say. Neither response was wrong, however, Jesus made an important point to set the standard for what our priority should be to ensure a healthy and necessary balance between receiving and serving.  The word makes it clear that the Lord has prepared good works for us to do and that we will one day be rewarded for them (Ephesians 2:10; 1 Corinthians 3:12-15).  However, one of the greatest dangers in our spiritual walk is serving the Lord without first receiving the strength and power from Him to complete the work. When Jesus said Mary, who chose to sit at His feet and receive, had chosen the better part; He was emphasising that without Him, we really can’t do anything of value. We are supposed to be completely dependent on Him to draw strength, wisdom and ability to serve in His kingdom. Spending quality time with the Lord, communing with Him, learning from His Word, loving Him and pouring our worship on Him is what refreshes and strengthens our spirits and revives our souls.  It builds our faith and empowers us to do His will with joy!  As we prioritise receiving from the presence of the Lord, we will find serving Him to be the greatest joy while producing fruit that will last forever.
