The Tongue is a Rudder

In the book of James, we are taught that the tongue is like a rudder. No matter the magnitude of the ship, the direction in which it travels is conducted by a small rudder. Even when the winds, waves and currents are strong – the rudder is powerful enough to cause that vessel to turn. We are told that if we simply control our tongues, we will be able to control every area of our lives. Can you imagine that? That’s because what we speak identifies what we have decided to internally come into agreement with. It is true that at times we speak words of frustration and say things we don’t really mean. Emotions are extremely strong and when our resistance is low – they most certainly can get the better of us.  Which is why the Apostle Paul urges us to train our flesh to remain in submission to our spirit-man, which is connected to God. Controlling our tongues is not easy, but it most certainly is possible! It has everything to do with keeping our minds renewed to the Word of God. As our hearts and minds are full of faith and truth, our words will align because they will always speak in agreement with our convictions. The question to ask is where has your rudder (tongue) directed your ship (life)? If it’s in a place of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost – then you have made the Word your habitation.  If not, then it’s time to realign your thoughts to be focused more on the truth of God’s Word than anything else.   Allow the Word of God to dictate to your tongue as you learn to yield incorrect mindsets to the Holy Spirit, and replace them with thoughts based on life, peace, and power.
