The Tree of Life

During the Christmas season trees of all sorts of shapes and sizes, decked with beautiful ornaments are displayed almost everywhere! Interestingly enough, the Bible makes mention of some pretty notable trees too. In the garden of Eden, God instructed Adam and Eve to refrain from eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In the Book of Revelation John saw a tree of life growing on either side of the river that streamed from the throne of God. In Deuteronomy the Bible says: “If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight on the tree”. As we can see from these verses, trees carry significance in the Scriptures. Paul writes to the Galatians that Jesus became a curse for us when He hung on the tree (the cross), so that the blessing of Abraham could come upon us. When Christ hung on the tree, He became sin for us. He who knew no sin became sin upon the cross. He did this so that the great exchange could take place! Our sin was placed upon Him so that His righteousness could be placed upon us! Amidst all the decorated trees and wreaths all around us in this season, never lose sight of what the perfect, sinless Jesus endured and accomplished for us as He hung on the tree! What a wonderful Saviour He is!
