In Genesis 11 we read about a people who were so unified in purpose that nothing would be impossible for them to achieve. The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them” (Genesis 11:6). The problem wasn’t their unity; it was where it was directed that displeased God. Because their hearts were evil and rebellious towards the Lord, there would be no end to the destruction and devastation their deeds would lead to.
Now, can you imagine the unstoppable power the church would have if we could just come into unity on this earth? If our hearts were one with God and each other, we could imagine whatever is on His heart and together put the devil out of business! No wonder the devil has made dividing the church his main priority. He’s got us thinking our unity is dependent on us agreeing with the same doctrine.
According to Ephesians 4:13-14 scriptural unity isn’t based on doctrine… Paul calls the winds of doctrine childish because they bring division, not unity. The unity we are called to is in the faith and knowing Jesus Christ! God’s requirements for unity are found in 1 John 3:23, “And this is His order (His command, His injunction): that we should believe in (put our faith and trust in and adhere to and rely on) the name of His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and that we should love one another, just as He has commanded us.” If we could stand together in this, nothing will be impossible for us to achieve!
