Truth is Freedom

You’ve probably heard part of this scripture used in a Hollywood movie or two. But there is so much more to these words – printed in red in the Bible – than is conveyed under the magic of lights, camera, action.  The word Truth, in modern terms, seems to have become a ‘fluid’ and complicated concept, depending on the context it’s being used in.  However, Jesus’s words are quite clear.  In verse 31 of John 8, He said: “IF you hold to my teaching…”. The King James version states, “IF ye continue in my word…” – “THEN you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”. In order to get free and become unshackled from anything constraining us from experiencing the full benefits of the finished work of the cross – we need to know the truth. And in order to know the truth, we must continue in the Word and hold on to the teachings of Jesus. The question then is, how do we discern truth? Years ago, tellers who worked in the foreign exchange in banks, were trained to be on constant alert for counterfeit money. It was impossible to learn and know about all the various counterfeit notes in circulation. Criminals would find innovative ways to falsely reproduce money. However, there was one sure method to guarantee the teller’s success in identifying the counterfeit – they knew what was real. They were trained to identify and look for certain distinct characteristics only a real note or bill would have. Just the same, with all his lies and deception, the enemy’s counterfeit cannot stand when measured against the Word. If we are double minded, we will be unstable in all we do (James 1:7). If we lack knowledge, we will perish (Hosea 4:6). But if we know and obey the Word – we will never be without the Father’s tangible Presence in our lives (John 14:23), and we always have access to His wisdom (James 1:5). His kingdom ways will guarantee our success and freedom will always be our portion!
